Trouble
shooting PS3 PS4 connection problems
I will try
to start simple but as you go through the steps it will get more
complicated...Before proceeding if you have a phone with a hotspot that you can
connect your game system up to ….see if it works..If it does then one of
the steps below may work,,,.If it doesn't then your game system may have a setup issue...If you can't try this step you
may spend a lot of time on the steps below only to find you need to trouble
shoot the PS3 or PS4 settings...
ADDED
NOTE…before trying all these steps, try turning your firewall off temporarily
as a test,,If it works one of the solutions below will probably work…If it
doesn’t try it on your friends router…If both of you have your firewalls off
and can’t connect you may have to resort to the last step below…
STEP 1 First we will try manually setting the DNS setting
on the playstation..This has solved many connection problems..
From the PS4 Menu (XMB), scroll right to Settings > Network > Set Up Internet Connection > Select either Wi-Fi or LAN cable (Wired)
Wi-Fi: Custom
> Select Network > Enter Password (automatically saved if you are already
using this network) > IP Address Settings (automatic) > DHCP Host Name
(Do Not Use) > DNS Settings (Manual)
LAN (Wired): Custom
> IP Address Settings (Automatic) > DHCP Host Name (Do Not
Use) > DNS Settings (Manual)
From there, enter the Primary DNS as "8.8.8.8" and
the Secondary DNS as "8.8.4.4"
Next > MTU
Settings (Automatic) > Proxy Server (Do Not Use) > Test Internet
Connection
STEP 2....Both
you and your friend need to check your NAT type...They must be NAT 2 or lower.
You can do this in SETTINGS > NETWORK > VIEW CONNECTION STATUS
NOTE..if
both of you are NAT 2 the steps below will likely not work and you will need to
either put one system on a hotspot or move it to a friends house to see if it’s
the game system setup that is cauusing the problem…OR.. see last step for a
radical solution….
If both are
NAT 2 and UPNP shows not available on
the game system continue to step 3.
STEP 3
....Before learning how to change NAT types we will try one simple solution.
Setting UPNP on...It howerver does require you to get into your router….SORRY…Most
routers can be accessed by typing 192.168.0.1, or 192.168.1.1 (netgear) or 192.168.2.1
(Belkin).in you web browser…The login will be admin, the password either blank,
password, or admin…..If they don’t work call your ISP..
UPNP will
be in the advanced section…Set it to on and test your system..If it doesn’t work
reset your router..If that doesn’t solve the problem continue to step 3..
STEP 4 …The
next step is to put your game system in the DMZ…This puts your game system
outside the firewall but so far there are no known exploits against PS
systems…Still there is a risk and if it doesn’t solve your connection issue try
the port forwarding step…..I am going to refer you to a youtube video here that
walks you through all the steps…there is one thing missing in the video so if
this steps works come back here for the missing step….
The step
missing here was to reserve the IP number on the router..If the procedure
worked you want to make sure that powering down the router doesn’t reassign a
new IP to the game…to do this you go into the DHCP section of the router and
there is a section to assign fixed IP’s to any of your devices/game systems…you
will need to get the mac address from your game to do this in SETTINGS>NETWORK> VIEW CONNECTION
STATUS…Once you have the mac address just
add a reserved port in your DHCP settings using the mac address and the
port you assigned in the video (108 was his example)….
STEP 5 …Now
you are getting serious and if DMZ didn’t work the last step before switching
cable providers is to try port forwarding….Port forwarding has many names in a
router..some use port triggering and some virtual servers…They all accomplish
the same thing for you which is to open ports specific to your game…The ports
you will be opening are 80, 443, 1935, 3478 – 3480…open them in both directions
(UDP and TCP)….set all the ports the
same (input output and forwarded) so basically you are opening port and
forwarding it to itself…If you have troubles there are tons of instructions on
the web on port forwarding for your specific router…
STEP 6…If
you got here and NOTHING else worked, don’t feel alone..I was here and so were
many other people…I spent a month with my cable provider trying to get them to
find THEIR problem…I could play on a hotspot with my friend and he could play
on a hotspot with me, but we couldn’t connect while both on the wideopen west
(WOW) cable service…I tried all the steps above at both our houses, and
finallyI had to switch to TWC….. and now we are back playing…
I hope this
helps someone else with this frustrating problem…
